I cannot say what is best, it would depend on what you are doing for the site. Is there going to be a sidebar? Is the site going to be contained with a background, like this one, or is it going to be full page all the same color? You have to take all of this into consideration when doing a design. You do not want your copy to go to the far left and right, it is easier to read when you do not have to read all the way across the screen. With all of this said, I go with 1,000px width. Why, because it makes easy math for the content sections. Also if you are making a responsive site and using percentages for your sections you do not need a calculator. Well this is my take on it anyway.
